Guatemala's energy and mines ministry has established a national biofuels commission as a first step to defining a biofuels strategy for the country, the ministry said in a statement.
The environment and natural resources, economy, and agriculture, livestock and food ministries also participated in the commission's creation.
Ministry officials agreed on the need to advance on biofuels in light of high fuel prices and fuel import dependence.
The commission is due to review a diagnostic report the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development will deliver at month-end outlining Guatemala's biofuels industry potential.
Guatemala currently produces and exports ethanol and biodiesel, the statement said.
