Brazilian crude steel production falls 6.3% in December

In December 2018, crude steel production was 2.6 million tons, a decrease of 6.3% compared to the same month of 2017. The production of rolled products was 1.6 million tons, a drop of 8.9% on the same basis of comparison. The production of semi-finished products for sales totaled 983 thousand tons and increased 1.2% in relation to the same month of the previous year [1].

Domestic sales fell 3.2% compared to December 2017, reaching 1.4 million tons. Apparent consumption of steel products was 1.5 million tonnes, 1.9% lower than in the same month of 2017.

Imports in December 2018 reached 160 thousand tons and US $ 167 million, resulting in a 9.6% increase in quantum and a decrease of 0.6% in value compared to December 2017.

Regarding exports, SECEX / MDIC changed the methodology [2] for collecting data from the Single Foreign Trade Portal, which could generate significant changes and revisions in December results, as occurred between August and November. Until the system is standardized, in order to continue the original trend of the data, Instituto Aço Brasil has chosen not to publish the export indicators temporarily.

Accumulated data up to December 2018

Crude steel production reached 34.7 million tons in the period from January to December 2018, an increase of 1.1% over the previous year. The production of rolled products in the same period was 23.1 million tons, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2017. The production of semifinished products for sales was 9.9 million tons in the accumulated of 2018, which means a increase on the same basis of comparison. [1]

Domestic sales were 18.3 million tons from January to December 2018, an increase of 8.2% when compared to the same period of the previous year.

The apparent domestic consumption of steel products was 20.6 million tons in the same period, which represents a rise of 7.3% compared to the accumulated from January to December 2017.

Imports reached 2.4 million tons in the accumulated of 2018, which translates into an expansion of 3.3% over the same period of the previous year. In value terms, imports reached US $ 2.6 billion, up 16.9% on the same basis of comparison.

Regarding exports, SECEX / MDIC changed the methodology [2] for collecting data from the Single Foreign Trade Portal, which could generate significant changes and revisions in December results, as occurred between August and November. Until the system is standardized, in order to continue the original trend of the data, Instituto Aço Brasil has chosen not to publish the export indicators temporarily.
