Colombia's transport ministry has awarded La Promesa de Sociedad Futura Concesionaria de Occidente a concession contract to build and maintain the Pereira-La Victoria highway, state news agency SNE reported.

Development of the 50.4km road will connect Autopista del café with the Valle del Cauca department road network and includes building a double-lane highway from Pereira to Cartago, and repairs to the road to La Victoria. This will unite Pereira with roads leading to Cali.

Occidente - comprised of Conalvías, Patria, Agremezclas, César Jaramillo and Edgar Jaramillo Cota - won the concession with an offer of 68.2bn pesos (US$25.9mn). The other offers ranged from 119.8bn to 249.4bn pesos, according to the news agency.

The award was made during a public audience to demonstrate the transparency of such processes following criticism of the award of the Bogotá-Girardot earlier this year.

Work should begin in February 2005, following preparatory work, and take 2.5 years to complete. The company will return the road to the state once it has received the income it asked for in its proposal.
