El Salvador's President Francisco Flores has opened the revamped 38km Comalapa expressway that runs between capital San Salvador and the international airport, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) said in a statement.
The US$25mn upgrade will benefit an estimated 700,000 people, with 8.38km of three lanes in both directions, and 29.62km of two lanes in each direction along the entire route.
CABEI provided US$19.1mn in financing, while local firm Pavimentos de Concreto was the lead contractor.
The bank approved US$206mn and disbursed US$279mn for El Salvador between July 2001 and June this year, which went to the country's highway network damaged by earthquakes, according to CABEI president Pablo Schneider.
