Australia-based BHP, formerly known as BHP Billiton Ltd., is a mineral resources company that operates in seven segments: petroleum; aluminum; base metals; carbon steel materials; diamonds and specialty products; energy coal; and stainless steel materials. BHP's interests in Latin American include a 57.5% share in Chile's Escondida copper mine, iron ore operations in Brazil, copper projects in Peru, and coal properties in Colombia. The company is an exporter of energy coal and metallurgical coal for the steel industry, and a producer of iron ore, copper, primary aluminum, manganese and chrome ferroalloys. It also has substantial interests in oil, gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), nickel, diamonds, silver and titanium minerals. BHP is currently spinning off its non-core assets to focus on its iron ore, copper, coal, petroleum and potash operations. In 2016, the company implemented a new operational model that groups the company's operations in three new areas: Oil, Minerals Americas and Minerals Australia.
