El Salvador's state Río Lempa hydropower commission, Grupo CEL, is engaged in the generation and sale of electric power from hydropower plants. Founded in 1945, the company owns and operates the Guajoyo, Cerrón Grande, 5 de Noviembre and 15 de Septiembre hydropower plants, all located along the Lempa river. Grupo CEL is also involved in the development of new renewable energy projects. Grupo CEL has four subsidiaries: geothermal energy development firm Geotérmica Salvadoreña (LaGeo), distributor Empresa Transmisora de El Salvador (ETESAL), investment company Inversiones Energéticas (INE), and power generation firm Compañía Eléctrica Cucumacayán (CECSA). In 2016 Grupo CEL completed the expansion and renovation of the 5 de Noviembre hydropower plant. Its project pipeline includes the reconstruction of the El Chaparral dam in San Luis de la Reina; the assessment of energy generation from biogas in Río Acelhuate; the Río Paz hydropower project on a river that separates El Salvador and Guatemala; the Metapán wind farm; and research and studies about solar, wind and wave energy to increase the country's energy matrix and reduce dependence on non-renewable energy.
